Supplementation with oxidised fish oil in pregnancy markedly increases neonatal mortality in male rat offspring

چکیده
Introduction Omega-3 fish oils are the most popular health supplements, taken by 15-30% of people at all stages of life, including pregnancy. These oils may improve insulin sensitivity through the recently characterized GPR120 receptor, but are chemically unstable and easily degrade into potentially toxic lipid peroxides. The health effects of oxidised fish oil are mostly unknown. We have shown that 89% of fish oil products in NZ exceed recommended oxidation limits, 36% by more than two-fold. We hypothesised: 1. Fish oil supplementation during pregnancy of insulin-resistant mothers would prevent adverse metabolic programming of the offspring. 2. Oxidised fish oil would cause adverse metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes

Oxidized fish oil in rat pregnancy causes high newborn mortality and increases maternal insulin resistance.
Fish oil is commonly taken by pregnant women, and supplements sold at retail are often oxidized. Using a rat model, we aimed to assess the effects of supplementation with oxidized fish oil during pregnancy in mothers and offspring, focusing on newborn viability and maternal insulin sensitivity. Female rats were allocated to a control or high-fat diet and then mated. These rats were subsequently...
متن کاملEffect of sesame oil consumption on the passive avoidance memory of rat offspring during pregnancy
Introduction: Previous studies have shown that sesame oil affects memory and learning. In the present work, effect of a diet containing 10% sesame oil used during pregnancy was evaluated on short-term passive avoidance learning of offspring rats by Shuttle box. Methods: Female Wistar rats were divided into 2 groups (n = 9 each group). Control group consumed regular diet during pregnancy and...

متن کاملThe aerobic maternal exercise increases PDK4 gene expression in slow and fast twitch muscles of rat male offspring.
Recent studies indicate that environment can modify skeletal muscle gene expression and transcriptional factors in offspring genes. Therefore, exercising can lead to changes in the gene expression of the future generations. One of the important metabolic factors is PDK4, which is known as the main factor in Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex (PDC). This study examined the effects of maternal exerci...
متن کاملStress during first pregnancy increases seizure threshold in adult male offspring
Objective(s): Stress induces many homeostatic aberrations which are followed by lifelong allostatic responses. Epilepsy is developed or influenced by different environmental factors, i.e. prenatal stress which makes many contradictory developmental changes in seizure threshold and intensity. We investigated the potential seizure response of the rat offspring to prenatal stress; the stres...
